This unit is a fundamental step in the production of process air for the plant.
This unit has the scope to produce SO2 by combining in stoichiometric ratio, the dry air and the sulphur which is sprayed through a special nozzle.
The SO2 stream enters the conversion tower equipped with 3 or 4 catalyst layers (depending on plant capacity) with the purpose to convert SO2 in SO3.
The reactor consists of a vertical bundle of small pipes like in a heat exchanger. The number of reaction pipes depends from the required production capacity.
The stream leaving the sulphonation reactor, after degassing through a cyclone, is immediately sent to the neutralization unit which is slightly different in accordance with the processed feed stock.
The exhaust gas contains minimal amounts of SO2, unreacted SO3, and some parts of organic acid. The ESP consists of a bundle of round tubes containing, and perfectly centred, axial electrodes.
